Capturing castles
We are fortunate in the UK that history is so palpable, and much of that has to do with the spectacular castles scattered across the country. Pembroke, Raglan, Harlech, Chepstow, Bamburgh… the list goes on, and those are just the ones that played a significant role in my story. Each one has its own character and trying to translate that onto a page is challenging. The only way to truly capture it is to visit them, and one of the best bits about writing The Sons of Prophecy has been the chance to do so, all in the name of research.
I think stepping through castle doors is as close to time travel as I’m ever likely to come. Within their walls, history takes on an almost tangible presence. Just think of the stories their ruined rooms could tell, the secrets are hidden in their cold stones.
